Fractions Tutorials Snapshot

This chapter deals with fractions, which are nothing more than the rational numbers we discussed in chapter 1. First, the structure of fractions and some basic concepts regarding fractions are explained. Then, the concept of equivalent fractions as a basis for simplifications, and other operations with fractions is given. At the end of the first tutorial, we will explain how to write a fraction in the lowest terms.

In the second tutorial, we discuss proper and improper fractions and how they differ from each other. Moreover, we will introduce another form of expressing improper fractions (mixed numbers) and you will learn how to convert from one form to the other, including some applications of them in practice.

The third tutorial focuses on comparing and ordering fractions. This is done either by turning fractions at the same denominator or at the same numerator. Then, we will explain how to express and compare fractions in a number line.

The fourth tutorial is focused on operations with fractions. First, individual operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and the power of fractions are explained. Then, you will learn how to solve an arithmetic expression containing fractions using the PEMDAS (BEDMAS) rule, as a rule that highlights the order of operations in such expressions.

The last tutorial is focused on converting fractions to decimals and vice versa. A great deal of this tutorial is dedicated to how to convert a recurring decimal into a fraction, which involves a new and special technique. Moreover, the concept of decimal fraction, as a prerequisite for converting a fraction to decimal is explained using numerous examples.
