Writing a Number as a Percentage of another Number

We can express a number A as a percentage of another number B by dividing A by B and express the corresponding result (either fraction or decimal) as a percentage. In general

A = x% of B ⟹ x = A × 100/B

Let's explain this point through an example.

Example 2

Express the numbers 21 and 37 as percentages of 50.

Solution 2

Using the above formula where A = 21 and B = 50, yields

A = x% of B ⟹ x = A ×100/B
21 = x% of 50 ⟹ x = 21 ×100/50 = 42

Hence, 21 = 42% of 50.

Again, taking A = 37 and B = 50, yields

A = x% of B ⟹ x = A ×100/B
37 = x% of 50 ⟹ x = 37 × 100/50 = 74

Hence, 37 = 74% of 50.
