Welcome to our Math lesson on How to expand brackets when the Expression inside them Divides a Number, this is the third lesson of our suite of math lessons covering the topic of Expanding Brackets, you can find links to the other lessons within this tutorial and access additional Math learning resources below this lesson.
Expanding Brackets When the Expression inside Them Divides a Number
This operation is not possible because
a ÷ (b ± c) ≠ a ÷ b ± a ÷ c
Let's clarify this point through a numerical example. Thus, if we have the arithmetic expression
30 ÷ (6 + 5)
the BEDMAS Rule suggests calculating the value of the expression inside the brackets first, and after that we complete the division. Hence,
30 ÷ (6 + 5)
= 30 ÷ 11
= 2.7272
However, if we tried to apply the expanding rule, we would obtain
30 ÷ (6 + 5)
= 30 ÷ 6 + 30 ÷ 5
= 5 + 6
= 11
which is a WRONG result. Therefore, the property of expanding brackets is not applicable when a number divides an expression inside brackets.
