Expanding Brackets When a Number Divides an Expression inside Them
This operation is possible and applicable. In symbols, we have
(a ± b) ÷ c = a ÷ c ± b ÷ c
The condition to apply this property is that c must not be zero.
This property derives from the properties of a fraction with a common denominator. Since fractions represent an alternative method of expressing division, we can write
(a ± b) ÷ c = a ± b/c = a/c ± b/c
(c ≠ 0)
which we already know is true. Hence, the property is confirmed.
In words, we can express this property as
A number that divides an expression inside brackets, divides all terms in the brackets when expanding them.

Simplify the expression
2 - 4 ∙ (2x + 5) + (6x - 4) ÷ 2
Solution 4
Applying the properties discussed in this guide, yields
2 - 4 ∙ (2x + 5) + (6x - 4) ÷ 2
= 2-4 ∙ 2x - 4 ∙ 5 + 6x ÷ 2 - 4 ÷ 2
= 2 - 8x - 20 + 3x - 2
= -5x - 20
