Welcome to our Math lesson on Calculating the Value of an Algebraic Expression, this is the second lesson of our suite of math lessons covering the topic of The Meaning of Expressions. Simplifying Expressions, you can find links to the other lessons within this tutorial and access additional Math learning resources below this lesson.
Calculating the Value of an Algebraic Expression
We must assign values to all variables of an algebraic expression in order to find the value of the whole expression (i.e. turning it into arithmetic expression). For example, the value of the algebraic expression
2x - 3y2 + 5z3 - 4
for x = 5, y = 1 and z = 2 is
2 ∙ 5 - 3 ∙ 12 + 5 ∙ 23 - 4
= 2 ∙ 5 - 3 ∙ 1 + 5 ∙ 8 - 4
= 10 - 3 + 40 - 4
= 7 + 40 - 4
= 47 - 4
= 43
Example 1
Calculate the value of the following algebraic expressions for m = 3 and n = -2.
- 2m2 - 4mn - n3 + 2
- 5 ∙ (m - n)
