Improper Fractions
When the numerator is greater that denominator, the fraction is known as improper. In this case, the value of fraction is greater than the whole. For example, if we want to express the value one and a half we write it as 3/2 because this amount represents three halves of an item, as shown below.
Example 1
What fractions do the following figures represent?
Solution 1
a) There are three whole squares containing 3 × 3 = 9 coloured strips and 2 other strips from the fourth square. In total, there are 9 + 2 = 11 strips. Hence, the numerator is 11. Since each square contains 3 strips (denominator = 3), the fraction corresponding to the first figure is 11/3. b) There are two pentagons of 5 triangles each; in total 2 × 5 = 10 triangles, plus two other triangles from the third pentagon, in total 12 triangles (numerator = 12).
