Converting Decimals into Percentages

As for decimals, we know that they can easily be converted into decimal fractions. The number of decimal places determines the number of zeroes in the denominator of the corresponding decimal fraction. For example,

0.68 = 68/100
4.6 = 46/10
3.475 = 3475/1000

etc.

If we want to transform these numbers into percentages, we must make all denominators of the corresponding fractions 100. Thus, if we consider the above numbers again, it yields

0.68 = 68/100 = 68%
4.6 = 46/10 = 46 × 10/10 × 10 = 460/100 = 460%
3.475 = 3475/1000 = 3475 ÷ 10/1000 ÷ 10 = 347.5/100 = 347.5%

Example 1

Convert the following numbers into percentages

  1. 9/30
  2. 7/14
  3. 30/24
  4. 6.32
  5. 0.907
  6. 11.001

Solution 1

Applying the methods described above, we obtain

  1. 9/30 = 9 ÷ 3/30 ÷ 3 = 3/10 = 3 × 10/10 × 10 = 30/100 = 30%
  2. 7/14 = 7 ÷ 7/14 ÷ 7 = 1/2 = 1 × 50/2 × 50 = 50/100 = 50%
  3. 30/24 = 30 ÷ 6/24 ÷ 6 = 5/4 = 5 × 25/4 × 25 = 125/100 = 125%
  4. 6.32 = 632/100 = 632%
  5. 0.907 = 907/1000 = 907 ÷ 10/1000 ÷ 10 = 90.7/100 = 90.7%
  6. 11.001 = 11,001/1000 = 11,001 ÷ 10/1000 ÷ 10 = 1100.1/100 = 1100.1%
