Converting Decimal Fractions into Percentages
Recall what the points we covered about fractions in the third chapter of this course. Fractions (otherwise known as rational numbers) are - usually but not always - non-whole numbers that can be expressed as a division between two whole numbers. For example,
1/3 = 1 ÷ 3
4/7 = 4 ÷ 7
12/5 = 12 ÷ 5
etc.
Percentages on the other hand - as explained in the previous tutoriall - are closely related to decimal fractions with a denominator of 100. For example,
20% = 20/100 = 1/5
32% = 32/100 = 8/25
148% = 148/100 = 37/25
etc.
In this paragraph, you will learn how to convert decimal fractions into percentages. It is the easiest thing to convert decimal fractions into percentages, as fractions of this type are easy to transform with denominator 100. However, if the fractions involved are not decimal, it is possible to transform them into decimal form through a few steps. Thus, applying the rules of equivalent fractions, we obtain, for example
34/5 = 34 × 20/5 × 20 = 680/100 = 680%
18/40 = 18 ÷ 2/40 ÷ 2 = 9/20 = 9 × 5/20 × 5 = 45/100 = 45%
21/28 = 21 ÷ 7/28 ÷ 7 = 3/4 = 3 × 25/4 × 25 = 75/100 = 75%
and so on.
